What happens at my first jiu jitsu class?

Your first class at High Tide Jiu Jitsu is free. Show up ten minutes early in comfortable clothes with a water bottle — no gi required to start. You'll warm up with the class, learn the technique of the day broken into pieces, and drill it with a partner who knows you're new. Live rounds are optional on day one.

What should I wear to my first class?

A t-shirt and athletic shorts or leggings without pockets, zippers, or buttons. Bring a water bottle. Training is barefoot on the mats, so sandals or slip-on shoes are easiest. If you decide to keep training, we'll point you at the right gi.

Yes — most people on our mats started with none. You don't need to be fit, flexible, or young. Technique is broken down for beginners in every class, and new students are paired with training partners who slow it down rather than test you.

What age can kids start jiu jitsu?

From age four. High Tide Jiu Jitsu splits kids by age so nobody is out of their depth: Little Groms is for ages 4–6, and Groms is for ages 7 and up. A four-year-old is never dropped into a class built for ten-year-olds.

Kids classes are supervised throughout and partners are matched by size and experience. Technique comes before intensity, sparring is controlled, and the coaching tone is playful with kids and focused with adults. Parents are welcome to watch from the side.

What's the difference between gi and no-gi jiu jitsu?

Gi jiu jitsu is trained in the traditional uniform, where grips on the fabric open up a wider set of controls and submissions. No-gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts — faster, more scrambly, and closer to wrestling. High Tide Jiu Jitsu runs both in the same week, so you can train one or both.

Are there early morning jiu jitsu classes?

Yes. High Tide Jiu Jitsu runs 6:00 AM adult classes Tuesday through Thursday — gi on Tuesday and Thursday, no-gi on Wednesday — so you can train before work. Evening classes run Monday through Thursday, and there are weekend morning classes on Saturday and Sunday.

Do you offer kickboxing as well as jiu jitsu?

Yes. Adult kickboxing runs Wednesday evening and Sunday morning. Classes cover stance, footwork, and pad work with an emphasis on clean technique and conditioning. Sparring is not required.
